The firm is delighted to announce that Mervyn Lai has joined the partnership with effect from 3rd January 2022.

Mervyn graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Manchester in 2011, and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012 (Lincoln’s Inn). He returned to Malaysia and read in the chambers of Alan Gomez that year.  He was called to the Malaysian Bar and admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya and commenced practice in 2013.  Mervyn left in 2015 to pursue his Master’s Degree in Competition Law at the University of Glasgow, and graduated with distinction in 2016, being the highest scorer in his year. Mervyn returned to Malaysia and joined the Firm in 2017.

Mervyn’s main areas of litigation practice are competition law and shareholder disputes. He is presently part of the team acting in an ongoing multi-jurisdictional shareholder dispute for control of a Malaysian public company. Mervyn was also involved in a partnership dispute in one of the largest law firms in Malaysia, and in oppression proceedings arising from a historic charitable trust, which were litigated at all 3 levels of Courts in Malaysia.  Mervyn has both acted and advised in competition law briefs, including a worldwide consumer class action brought in the United States against a Fortune 500 global consumer technology company. His competition law expertise is much sought after by local corporations and their officers, to whom he frequently gives presentations on Competition / Antitrust law and Malaysian regulatory developments.

Mervyn is also developing his practice in defamation law, and acts for a high profile foreign journalist at the High Court in a defamation suit brought against her.

Mervyn is a contributor to the Malaysian Civil Procedure publication and also regularly authors articles, some of which have been published in the Malayan Law Journal.
