About the Firm
A Passion For The Law
When Tommy Thomas and Sitpah Selvaratnam decided to leave one of Malaysia’s largest law firms, they believed that there was a demand for a boutique litigation firm, organised along the lines of a barrister’s chambers in England.
They shared a vision of a firm built on the ideals of justice, independence and fair-play. Their firm would never be large; ensuring a personal touch with strict quality control. It would be known for its high standards of integrity and professionalism. The cab-rank rule would be practiced, and parties espousing unpopular causes would be accepted as clients.
On 1st January 2000, at the start of the new millennium, they marked a new chapter in their professional lives with the establishment of TOMMY THOMAS.
TOMMY THOMAS provides counsel and solicitors’ services in respect of disputes, potential disputes and advisory assistance. The breadth and depth of the combined experience within the firm has positioned TOMMY THOMAS as the firm of choice in litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution.
The team is known for handling some of Malaysia’s largest and most complex cases. In addition to its outstanding track record on commercial cases, it has a strong public law practice, acting on major judicial review and constitutional matters. Also frequently sought after for major appellate work.”
Chambers Asia
TOMMY THOMAS is the only small firm in Benchmark Asia Pacific’s list of 7 “Highly Recommended Leading Disputes” firms in Malaysia. Despite our size, we are regularly instructed in complex heavy commercial trials and appellate briefs, thus competing with much larger firms.
We enjoy a reputation as a fearless and independent firm.
As staunch believers in the cab rank rule, we will act for any party within the firm’s areas of practice, provided there is no conflict of interest. In the highest traditions of the Bar, we are committed to pro bono work in deserving cases, and have established scholarship funds and awards for promising students and junior members of the Bar. We regularly advise and represent the Bar Council in complicated litigation matters.
